According to News Mondo, Arsenal and Everton are both interested in signing Hoffenheim midfielder Kerem Demirbay during the January transfer window.

What's the story?

Both Arsenal and Everton are in the market for new players this month, and it does appear that it could be a busy January for Premier League clubs.

According to News Mondo, one player on the wishlist of both teams is Hoffenheim's Demirbay, who has shown his qualities in the Bundesliga this season.

The 24-year-old, who has two goals and five assists to his name this term, is an all-action central midfielder.

Demirbay, who is valued at £10.8m by transfermarkt.co.uk, made his debut for the German national team last year, and his form is expected to see him earn a call-up for the 2018 World Cup.

A high-profile switch to the Premier League would certainly aid his chances of making the squad for next summer's tournament, and he would surely find it difficult to turn down Arsenal or Everton if either came calling during the winter transfer window.

Do Arsenal and Everton need another midfielder?

In short, yes. Arsenal are currently without the services of the injured Aaron Ramsey, and they are lacking genuine quality in the middle of the park, especially with Santi Cazorla still on the sidelines.

Jack Wilshere has played plenty of football in recent weeks - impressing in the process - but there are question marks over Granit Xhaka's influence.

As for Everton, their 2-0 defeat to Manchester United on New Year's Day demonstrated their lack of serious quality in the middle of the park.

Wayne Rooney, Tom Davies and Morgan Schneiderlin all struggled against the Red Devils, and whilst Idrissa Gueye is a brilliant talent, the Toffees are crying out for another option in that area of the field.

It is unlikely that Demirbay will force either Arsenal or Everton to break the bank, and the midfielder could turn out to be a very smart signing.
