In Focus: European giants ready to frustrate Liverpool with January swoop

The saga concerning Philippe Coutinho at Liverpool has not been drawn to a close with the end of the transfer window and Barcelona will return for the Brazilian in January, Spanish outlet Sport reports.

What’s the story?

Having handed in a transfer request this summer and failing to secure a move to Barcelona, who saw numerous bids rejected by Liverpool, Philippe Coutinho seems an unhappy figure on Merseyside but he still has the chance of making his dream move.

Sport state the Catalan giants have not ended their pursuit of the Brazilian and will return with a fresh offer in January, with Coutinho yet to feature for Liverpool this season due to a back injury- but he was fit enough to feature and score in his nation’s World Cup qualifying victory over Ecuador.

Whilst Liverpool’s resolve has always remained strong on Coutinho, there’s only so far that can go if the South American starlet wants to leave and many believed the Reds were daft this summer for turning down audacious sums of money for the playmaker.

Will he stay?

Given the series of events concerning Coutinho’s links to Barcelona, it really is a case of ‘when’ and not ‘if’ the Brazilian leaves Liverpool and the danger is that things could start to boil behind the scenes, potentially then causing immense problems behind the scenes.

It’s something that Liverpool may not be alone with this year, as Alexis Sanchez at Arsenal and Virgil Van Dijk at Southampton experienced similar, but the resolve of Liverpool to keep Coutinho in January is likely to be a lot stronger than their counterparts.

Barcelona also have a record of pulling controversial stunts in their quest to get major deals over the line, including getting star players to speak about a move and forcing a Barcelona shirt on Cesc Fabregas whilst he was on international duty, so it’s unlikely we’re anywhere near the end of this saga.
