According to reports in the Daily Mirror, Manchester United are ready to battle Premier League rivals Arsenal for the signing of £15m-rated Celtic defender Kieran Tierney.
Well, the Daily Mirror says that Red Devils manager Jose Mourinho is keen to sign a new left-back this summer with Luke Shaw’s future at Old Trafford in doubt after he failed to impress the Portuguese boss last season.
Mourinho has been keeping a close eye on the performances of the 20-year-old north of the border, and he is keen for the club to launch a £15m offer for the Scotland international, according to the Daily Mirror.
The report adds that Arsenal are also keen on the full-back, but having signed Sead Kolasinac their interest may have now cooled.
However, the Bhoys want to keep Tierney for at least another season as he still has four years left on his contract.
Despite his tender years – he only turned 20 years of age last month – the left-back established himself as a regular in the Celtic side last season.
He made 40 appearances in all competitions for Brendan Rodgers’ men – it would have been more if he hadn’t have ruptured his cruciate ligament mid-season – finishing the campaign with two goals and an impressive 12 assists.
The latter statistic shows that he is as good from an attacking point of view as he is defensively, and he was also one of the stand-out Scottish performers in their 2-2 draw against England at Hampden Park last month.
With Luke Shaw failing to impress and the likes of Matteo Darmian, Ashley Young and Marcos Rojo more comfortable in their natural positions rather than at left-back, the spot certainly looks to be up for grabs next season.
While Mourinho wouldn’t want to put too much pressure on the 20-year-old right away if he did move to Old Trafford, he has shown with his performances for Celtic in the Champions League that he is capable of performing at the very highest level.
It’s difficult to see Celtic accepting that price considering some of the crazy prices being bandied about in the summer transfer window already, but it isn’t totally out of the question – especially if the player wants to go.
Well, it seems as though Tierney is destined for the top and he could be a great signing for Man United, if they can convince Celtic to sell.
