According to reports in The Sun, Southampton duo Oriol Romeu and Cedric Soares are said to be summer transfer targets for Spanish giants Barcelona.
Well, with the La Liga leaders on the brink of exiting the Champions League at the round of 16 stage and with manager Luis Enrique already announcing that he will leave the club in the summer, it looks as though there will be some major changes at Barca this summer.
With Sergio Busquets suffering from injury problems and getting no younger, and with no long-term replacement for Dani Alves found, the Catalan side are said to have watched and been impressed with the form of Saints duo Oriol Romeu and Cedric Soares this season.
Not necessarily. Of course, any potential move will all depend on who Barcelona’s new manager is, and whether the individual feels that the two players would strengthen the team.
While Romeu and Cedric have been two of the standout performers for Southampton in recent months, a move to the Camp Nou is a huge step up – although of course both would surely jump at the chance of playing for one of the world’s biggest clubs.
Barca do know Romeu well though having had the 25-year-old on their books before he left for Chelsea.
Of course, and they are in a good position to be.
Romeu only signed a new four-and-a-half year deal with Saints in January, while Euro 2016 winner Cedric penned a new four-year contract in August, so the club should hold the power when it comes to making their key men stay at St Mary’s.
Chairman Ralph Krueger recently told talkSPORT that there wouldn’t be another firesale of players this summer as the club look to push on.
Time will tell.
