According to reports in the Daily Mail, Tottenham Hotspur are lining up a move for £18m-rated Bayer Leverkusen full-back Benjamin Henrichs as an alternative to Hoffenheim’s Jeremy Toljan.

What’s the word, then?

Well, Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino is in the market for a new full-back following the departure of Kyle Walker to Manchester City last month, and the Daily Mail lists Hoffenheim’s Toljan as a potential target.

However, the 22-year-old Germany Under-21 international is interesting Real Madrid and Bayern Munich, according to the Daily Mail, which means that Pochettino is keeping his options open and could look at potential alternatives.

The reports adds that the Argentine boss is considering making a move for Henrichs, with the 20-year-old’s representatives keen to discuss a potential deal that could take the 20-year-old to the Premier League.

How did Henrichs do last season?

The defender was a regular for Leverkusen last season and made 37 appearances in all competitions – including 29 in the Bundesliga and seven in the Champions League – providing three assists.

While the majority of those outings came at right-back, the 20-year-old also featured at left-back on 11 occasions, and that versatility and ability to do that at a young age will have impressed any potential suitors like Spurs.

Would he be a good signing for Tottenham?

He certainly would be, yes,

There is little doubt that Kieran Trippier needs some more competition after Walker left for Man City and while Henrichs has shown that he has the quality to do that, he could also provide cover for Danny Rose and Ben Davies on the opposite flank if needed.

The Germany Under-21 international showed his defensive qualities by making 101 interceptions and 68 clearances in 29 Bundesliga appearances last term, while he was also successful with 73 tackles.

The 20-year-old loves to get forward too – something which is important to Spurs’ style of play – and he successfully completed 32 take-ons in the German top flight last term.

The fact that his contract is due to expire in 2022 explains the £18m price tag, but it might be one worth paying when you see the potential the young German has and the initial £45m fee that Tottenham got for Walker this summer.
