According to the Daily Mail, West Ham United have been offered the chance to sign Newcastle United forward Aleksandar Mitrovic.

What's the story?

It would hardly be the shock of the century if Mitrovic left Newcastle when the January transfer window opens for business.

The 23-year-old has not started a single Premier League game this season despite Newcastle's struggles in the final third of the field, and it is clear that Magpies boss Rafael Benitez just does not fancy the former Anderlecht frontman.

According to the Daily Mail, Newcastle have actually offered West Ham the opportunity to sign the Serbian international, and Hammers boss David Moyes believes that he might be able to sign the striker on the cheap.

It does seem strange that Newcastle would be prepared to sell to a Premier League rival, but it is clear that Mitrovic's face just does not fit under Benitez.

Do West Ham need him?

On the face of it, West Ham have an abundance of strikers. Javier Hernandez, Andy Carroll and Diafra Sakho are all battling for a spot in the club's first XI.

Michail Antonio has also played through the middle in the team's last couple of matches, suggesting that the Hammers are well stocked in that area of the field.

The London club have only managed 14 goals in their 16 Premier League matches this season, however, which is among the poorest records in the division.

Moyes is said to be seriously considering bringing a new forward to the London Stadium next month, and despite Mitrovic's problems this season, he did score nine Premier League goals during his first year in the top flight.

You just get the feeling that Newcastle would come to regret selling Mitrovic to one of their main rivals when it comes to position in the Premier League.
