John Stones slammed for disappointing display against Everton

John Stones may have wanted to steer clear of Twitter following Manchester City’s match against Everton after the defender received online criticism for his performance at Goodison Park.

The England international signed for City from Everton last summer in a £47.5m deal, but he is yet to make his mark.

Overall, Pep Guardiola’s defence has come into criticism plenty of times this season, but all eyes were on Stones when the team arrived on Merseyside.

It was an opportunity for the defender to show the home crowd that he was right to make the step up to the two-time Premier League champions, but he disappointed as City lost 4-0.

Guardiola’s men let in goals from Romelu Lukaku, Kevin Mirallas and Tom Davies before Stones made a blunder before conceding a fourth to January signing Ademola Lookman.

The defender made a hash of a clearance in an attempt to halt Seamus Coleman’s run down the right wing.

He whacked the ball directly at his opponent and it rebounded into the path of Lookman, who slotted into the back of the net.

After the game, fans took to Twitter to lambaste Stones for his performance.
