Leeds could be in trouble if Phil Hay’s Dwight Gayle prediction comes true

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Phil Hay’s Q&A sessions in The Athletic are a great source of news surrounding the Elland Road outfit, but they are somewhat repetitive at times.

Every single week the former Yorkshire Evening Post journalist is subjected to the same questions time and time again, and one of these is regarding Dwight Gayle

The Leeds fanbase are seemingly quite obsessed with the prospect of Gayle signing for the Whites, but Hay’s response has always been the same, and if he’s right it spells trouble for the Yorkshire outfit.

What’s been said then?

Whenever Hay has been asked about Gayle’s future he’s not only dispelled any notion of the striker coming to Elland Road, but he’s also stated that he may well be joining one of Leeds’ promotion rivals.

“The noises suggest that Gayle might well be going to Forest next month.” Hay said in his most recent Q&A.

“They like Dwight Gayle but he’ll be too pricey and will probably go to Forest” He said after Leeds’ win against Reading.

How many times have Leeds United won the FA Cup?

And on the 28th of November Hay stated: “Dwight Gayle is such a threat in this league but I appreciate that he’s also expensive. The jungle drums say he’ll be going to Forest.”

You get the picture, the journalist seemingly has it on good authority that the striker may well be headed to the City Ground, and that spells danger for Leeds United in more ways than one.

Bad news

Not only is it rather annoying to hear that Leeds won’t be signing a man who has proven himself to be one of the best strikers in the Championship in recent years by netting over 20 goals for both Newcastle and West Brom, but to hear that he’s joining one of the Whites’ biggest promotion rivals is devastating.

The Reds sit just two places behind Leeds in the league table, and the addition of Gayle to their squad will only strengthen their chances of leapfrogging the Whites.

Forest have a strong defence as they’ve conceded just 14 goals this term, so if they sign one of the deadliest strikers this league has seen in the past decade, you’d have to make them one of the favourites for promotion.

Are you worried about Forest potentially signing Gayle

Hay is rarely wrong with his transfer updates, but Leeds fans will have to hope that he’s slightly off the mark with this one.
