Leeds landing Ben Gibson could improve their promotion hopes

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

Per a report from The Northern Echo, Leeds are one of the sides showing an interest in Burnley’s Ben Gibson this summer.

What’s the word?

Leeds have signed one defender in Ben White whilst they’ve also welcomed Helder Costa to the club as the Whites look to improve on last term.

Pontus Jansson has departed, however, leaving a hole in Marcelo Bielsa’s defence.

Director of Football Victor Orta has previously laid down claims that they have carried out 90% of the plan they had in place in regards to transfers, but that hasn’t stopped another potential incoming being touted.

According to The Northern Echo, Leeds are in the race for Gibson who has also attracted the eyes of Newcastle, Aston Villa, Norwich and Sheffield United.

Promotion hopes boosted?

The Whites head into the remaining weeks of the transfer window clearly in need of a defender after the rather poor performances of Liam Cooper and Gaetano Berardi against Manchester United.

Leeds lost that game 4-0, a match which displayed their inconsistencies.

Indeed after the departure of Jansson, someone who started 37 times in the Championship last season, they need to replace him.

Attempting to land Gibson, therefore, would be ideal and could help put them in a better place for promotion.

The 26-year-old doesn’t only boast the qualities necessary to improve the side but he has proven experience in a promotion campaign with Middlesbrough when they went up to the top-flight following a successful 2015/16 season.

During that term in the second tier, he was particularly impressive, making 2.5 interceptions per game which demonstrates his exceptional reading of the play.

In comparison, Jansson averaged 2.3 throughout 2018/19. In fact, the only player that was better or equal to both the Swede and Gibson was Cooper who made 2.5 interceptions as well.

Burnley paid £15m for the centre-back last season, meaning Leeds may well miss out if the fee is that high again.

However, The Northern Echo states they will try to do a deal if the price is right.
