Leeds must move for Nick Powell at the start of 2019

Nick Powell will see his contract with Wigan Athletic expire at the end of the season, and Leeds United should attempt to secure a cut-price deal for the talented attacker during the January transfer window.

What’s the word, then?

Powell’s future has been the subject of much speculation in recent months, with the 24-year-old seeing his current contract at the DW Stadium expire in June 2019.

It seems unlikely that the midfielder will pen fresh terms, and TEAMtalk are currently linking Bundesliga outfit RB Leipzig with a move.

A whole host of clubs are interested in signing Powell, and Leeds should make a strong play for the former Manchester United youngster in the January transfer window.

Back in August, it was reported that Wigan would be prepared to accept £5m for Powell, and the Latics would surely rather receive a fee than risk losing him on a free transfer at the end of the season.

Why should Leeds move for Powell?

Powell scored 16 times in 64 appearances for Crewe Alexandra before Sir Alex Ferguson brought him to Old Trafford in the summer of 2012.

Powell only made nine appearances for the Red Devils, with the move coming far too soon in his career. However, he did show glimpses of his talent at Old Trafford, and has developed into a fine footballer.

Indeed, the midfielder has gone from strength to strength since arriving at Wigan in 2016, and managed 15 goals in all competitions for the club last term.

This season, Powell has managed four goals and five assists in 16 Championship appearances, and there is no question that he would boost Leeds.

Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa recently claimed that it would be difficult for his club to spend in the January window, but a move for Powell would give the Whites a huge boost as they battle to earn promotion to the Premier League.
