What is going on with Leeds United’s transfer window?

Last week it seemed as though they were gearing up to announce the signing of Elia Caprile, yet everything seems to have gone quiet on that front.

Indeed, despite Phil Hay tweeting on the 13th that the Italian should be signing on that day, there’s still been no official announcement of his arrival.

However, the journalist’s recent comments indicate that the deal is still very much on.

What’s been said then?

The Athletic’s Leeds United correspondent detailed the state of play on Leeds’ current transfer plans.

“They’re obviously looking at Ian Poveda at Manchester City, the Colombian/England youth international who should have been at Thorp Arch today. I think he will sign off - they’ve certainly been discussing personal terms and everything, so that should go through,” Hay said (The Phil Hay Show 17/11/20 20:00).

“There’s been some scouting involved there, and there’s been some scouting involved for Elia Caprile, the keeper who has come in from Italy and has been training with the club this week.”

Good preparation

You’d think that all signs point towards this deal being done.

Perhaps it’s a bit of international clearance that needs sorting or some fine details between the two clubs, but if Caprile is already training with Leeds, then this one must be just a matter of time before an announcement happens.

Aside from the fact that Leeds look likely to land their first signing of the window, there is another positive to take from this.

Caprile is being brought in as a third-choice, and although he’s unlikely to see regular first-team minutes this season he could be called upon if Kiko Casilla’s ban comes to fruition and Illan Meslier is injured or suspended during that time.

The fact that the Italian is already learning Bielsa’s ways is encouraging and he’ll be more than prepared if he’s needed in the near future.

In other news, Leeds’ pursuit of a striker may be at a dead-end after Sky Sports’ transfer update.
