Leeds United are looking to take Everton defender Matthew Pennington on another season-long loan after the 23-year-old spent last season at Elland Road, according to the Liverpool Echo.

What's the story?

The Echo reports that Pennington, who recently signed a new three-year contract in May, is also a target for fellow Championship side Wigan Athletic. The former England U19 international made just 24 league appearances for the Whites last season and made a number of high profile mistakes.

Matthew Pennington grimaces after losing to Leeds

New Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa has already used his reputation in the world of management to make three loan signings from the Premier League this summer, with Lewis Baker and Jamal Blackman arriving from Chelsea and Jack Harrison making the switch from Manchester City.

Left-back Barry Douglas has also arrived from Wolves but another centre-back should be a priority, especially with the future of Laurens De Bock in doubt.

A better option

However, with these young loan signings coming in and with Leeds being Bielsa's first job in England, the dressing room at Elland Road could do with a leader to guide the team through their Championship campaign.

For this reason, a better signing than Pennington from Everton would be 35-year-old centre-back Phil Jagielka. The Manchester-born man has made 378 appearances for the Blues and 40 for England.

If Bielsa could convince the experienced defender to make the step down to the second tier of English football, even if he couldn't break into the first team, he could play a role similar to what he will do for Marco Silva's side which would include acting as a leader and mentoring the youngsters of the team.
