Leeds would have to pay far too much for Jarrod Bowen

Leeds have been in the market for a goal scorer this month.

The likes of Che Adams, Dwight Gayle and Billy Sharp, three players who netted more than 20 Championship goals last term, have all been linked with a move to Elland Road.

It seemed that United would be looking for a new striker to bolster their attacking threat, but a recent report indicates that a goalscoring winger could be coming through the door instead.

What’s the story?

The Sun have reported that Leeds are lining up a move for Hull’s Jarrod Bowen.

Alan Nixon’s article states that the Whites would pay a £3m loan fee for the winger, and that will then become permanent for around £15m if Leeds are promoted this season.

However, it falls just a tad shy of the apparent £20m fee Hull are searching for in order to let him leave.

Too much

You can understand why Leeds are interested in the winger. He’s scored 38 Championship goals over the past season and a half, but this deal just doesn’t seem like a good financial move.

Firstly, a £3m outlay for a six-month loan is bordering on ridiculous, and that is bound to have an effect on Leeds’ FFP situation if they do fail in their quest for promotion this season.

It’s been made clear that the Whites are right on the cusp of profit and sustainability restrictions and last summer brought its fair share of issues as the club had to make do with loan signings only.

If they do go up, however, outlaying £15m for a man whose contract is up this summer is simply poor value, especially when you consider that he’s never played in the Premier League.

Adam Forshaw

How much did Leeds pay to sign Adam Forshaw from Middlesbrough?

Above all else, the right side isn’t an area that Leeds desperately need to strengthen. Helder Costa was signed for £15m last summer and Pablo Hernandez is a two-time Player of the Year winner.

Landing Bowen for the terms suggested would fail to make any sense, even if he has scored 16 times this term.

In other news, Jack Harrison’s future could be affected by Leeds completing this eight-figure deal.
