The Capital One Cup hosted a Yorkshire derby on Tuesday night, as Leeds booked their place in Round 3 of the competition with a win over fellow Championship side Doncaster Rovers. It was a tight first half encounter for 40 minutes, but the deadlock was broken by defender Sam Wooten, who headed Leeds in front on his debut for the club.

From there Leeds pushed on, and started the second half as they ended the first. Both Ross McCormack and Dominic Poleon had opportunities to double Leeds’ advantage, but failed to do so. United were made to pay just after the 60 minute mark, as against the run of play, David Cotterill picked out former Leeds striker Billy Paynter, who glanced his header home to level the scores. It was a cruel blow for Leeds fans, who had grown frustrated with Paynter’s lack of goals during his time at Elland Road. The 29-year-old celebrated his goal too!

But while home fans started to consider extra time, or even snatching a winner, their hopes were smashed when Matty Smith scored his first goal for Leeds, heading past Ross Turnbull and restoring the visitor’s lead with just 13 minutes remaining. It was like a bad dream for Rovers manager Paul Dickov, who had enjoyed watching Smith score so many during their time at Oldham, only for the manager to be now on the receiving end of a Smith special.

Dickov’s hopes of a cup run were over for certain three minutes later after Reece Wabara fouled Poleon in the box, and McCormack stepped up to seal the victory for Leeds, who left the Keepmoat Stadium with derby pride, and a place in the next round of the competition.

The former Blackburn forward, now at his second club as a manger, felt that Smith should have been penalised for a foul, but spoke lightheartedly of the goal after the match: “I lost count of the number of times he did that for Oldham and a foul was given, so it’s sod’s law that he did it against us and got away with it.”

But it was all smiles for Leeds, who host QPR in the Championship on Saturday, with the two sides sharing contrasting fortunes in this season’s Capital One Cup.

Were Leeds fans pleased with their side's performance?
