Leeds United may have been beaten by Arsenal on Monday evening, but that doesn’t quite tell the entire story of the game.

The Whites were well and truly in the tie throughout the match, and the opening 45 minutes were described by Yorkshire Evening Post journalist Graham Smyth as a battering.

The Yorkshire club put on a solid performance, and a number of their players had brilliant individual performances.

Players like Kalvin Phillips who had nine tackles and Jack Harrison who had three shots on target caught the eye, but one man who many Arsenal fans were focused on was Illan Meslier.

The Frenchman was making his senior debut in English football, and he didn’t disappoint as he conceded just once while doing a great job of keeping over £150m worth of attacking talent at bay. Throughout the tie, he produced four saves.

Understandably, this type of showing from a Championship player caught the eye of a number of Gunners supporters and the Emirates faithful urged their club to sign the youngster.

Another section of the fanbase wanted him to replace Emiliano Martinez as the backup goalie at the Emirates.

Unfortunately, some Arsenal fans may be getting ahead of themselves with this one.

Of course, it is exciting when you see a player perform well on their debut. You feel like you’ve just unearthed a new star, but this was Meslier’s first appearance for his new club, so he may have just had a one-off brilliant showing in front of a huge crowd due to the adrenaline running through his veins rather than an abundance of talent.

In other news, Danny Pugh exclusively told FootballFanCast that Leeds “can’t go wrong” with one signing.
