Leicester goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel deservedly signed a new contract with the Foxes recently, but Chelsea could be kicking themselves that they missed the chance to sign the 31-year-old on a cut price deal this summer, as his value will now have skyrocketed.

According to Sky Sports, at one point during the summer window Chelsea were interested in the Danish international as a replacement for the wantaway Courtois. However, when the Belgian stopper eventually sealed his move to Real Madrid, a deal never materialised for Schmeichel and the West London club signed the relatively untested Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Kasper Schmeichel for Leicester

Schmeichel though is a fantastic and experienced Premier League keeper who has many of the attributes and traits that made his father one of, if not the best in the world during his time at Manchester United. The Leicester man has the strong hands and ability to fill the goal in the face of an onrushing striker that were so synonymous with Peter’s goalkeeping style.

Kasper has now been at Leicester since 2011 when he signed from Leeds for just £1.51m, according to Transfermarkt, so if he had of left during the summer the Foxes would have received a considerable return on their investment.

His new deal though, worth £120,000 a week with bonuses according to The Sun, makes him the highest paid Dane in world football, ahead of Spurs star Christian Eriksen, and puts him level with Jamie Vardy as the highest paid players at Leicester.

However, although he may feel a strong connection with the club that made him a Premier League champion, in truth Schmeichel could be at a bigger club than Leicester and Chelsea could have been an ideal destination.

Kepa Arizzabalaga unveiled as a Chelsea player

Whilst we may not have seen enough of Kepa to pass judgement just yet, his distribution has at times looked shaky he and would have been disappointed not to keep out Henrikh Mkhitaryan's strike in the win over Arsenal.

The 23-year-old cost Maurizio Sarri’s side a world record £72m fee from Athletic Bilbao after the Blues sold Thibaut Courtois to Madrid. Apart from Mkhitaryan's strike he is yet to really be tested in his first four Premier League games, but has still conceded three goals.

Chelsea also brought in Robert Green this summer but the 38-year-old former England keeper is one for the Premier League’s homegrown quota and may never get a look-in. The club should have taken a chance on Schmeichel though before he signed the improved deal at the King Power as if Kepa doesn’t fulfil his potential, it could be a costly call to Leicester’s Thai owners in January or next summer.
