One of the big transfer stories of the summer saw Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy attract heavy interest from Arsenal, with the England international heading to the European Championships whilst mulling over the Gunners offer.
In the end, to the surprise of many, Vardy rejected the advances of Arsene Wenger’s side to remain with the defending Premier League champions for their historic season in the Champions League and Claudio Ranieri has revealed exactly how he persuaded the forward to remain at the King Power.
After fighting back to form with a superb hat-trick against Manchester City at the weekend, Ranieri recalled his inspiring comments to the forward over the summer. Quoted by Squawka, he said:
“In the summer, I said: ‘You made this dream true – stay and keep going with us, because we want to continue to dream’. Now, he starts to dream [again], which is good.”
Vardy and Leicester face a different sort of battle this season though, with the Foxes fending off the threat of relegation and also fighting on the European stage, with their Round of 16 draw seeing them clash with three-time Europa League winners Sevilla in Spring.
With vast differences between Leicester’s performances in Europe and in the Premier League, Ranieri needs to bring the continental form to the domestic campaign and he’ll hope Vardy’s hat-trick against the Citizens can put the England international back at his best.
