The signing of Youri Tielemans was considered a coup for Leicester City when they moved to secure his services on a short-term loan deal in January.
The Belgium international has already established a glowing reputation across Europe during his development thus far, and the glowing reviews which preceded his move to the King Power Stadium have been more than justified during his time in England.
At 21-years-old Tielemans is a huge talent for the future and the Foxes faithful are naturally hoping that their club can secure a permanent deal this summer.
According to a report from the Daily Mail published in March, Leicester will need to pay £40 million to prise him away from Monaco, while a more recent report from highly-regarded Belgian journalist Kristof Terreur, per HLN, claims that Leicester are already in close contact with the Ligue 1 side over a potential deal.
With that in mind, Football FanCast writers have been discussing Tielemans’ progress at Leicester and have delivered their verdicts on whether the club should sign him on a permanent basis this summer.
Based on the standard of his performances during the opening months of his career in English football, it’s fair to say it would be a major coup for Leicester to fend off interest from elsewhere and sign him permanently…
“Yes. If you’ve ever played FIFA career mode you know just how high Tielemans’ ceiling is. Moving back to real life now, the Belgian has been a joy to watch since joining the Foxes, providing that missing link between the workhorse midfielders like Wilfried Ndidi and Nampalys Mendy and the flair players like James Maddison and Jamie Vardy. He also adds goals and assists from midfield, something which is invaluable in modern football. At just 21-years-of-age there’s really no telling how good he can become.”
“I think when a player as highly-rated as Tielemans becomes even slightly available, you have to do what you can to sign him – whatever the price. In Leicester’s case, they are in an excellent position to land the Belgian having tied him down on a loan deal back in January, where he has already shown glimpses of his obvious quality. Under a manager like Brendan Rodgers, with exciting young players littered around the team such as Ben Chilwell, Demarai Gray and Wilfried Ndidi, Tielemans would be an excellent addition to the side.”
“Without a doubt. If Leicester can get a player of Tielemans’ calibre they have to do it, whatever the price. The Foxes need to prove to Brendan Rodgers this summer that they can meet the big ambitions he will obviously have, and spending £40m on Tielemans would certainly go a long way to doing exactly that. At 21-years-old he can be Leicester’s future alongside Maddison, and if he can rediscover the goal-scoring form he showed for Anderlecht earlier in his career he will be a huge asset for the east Midlands outfit.”
“£40m is small change these days and Tielemans is worth it. He’s a fantastic young player and has already added an extra dimension to Leicester’s play. The only likely stumbling block is other clubs – it’d be a shock if the likes of Spurs and Arsenal weren’t interested too.”
