Liverpool, Manchester United and Chelsea have been dealt a blow in their respective pursuits of Nemanja Matic, with Napoli set to step up their interest in the Befica ace, according to reports from The Express.
Since leaving the Blues in 2011 as part of the deal that took David Luiz to Stamford Bridge, the Serbian international has emerged as one of Europe’s top talents.
His consistent displays for the Lisbon giants have alerted a number of top sides from across the continent, including the Premier League trio.
United, Liverpool and Chelsea have all been linked with January move for Matic, however Napoli are now thought to be at the front of the queue.
The Italians are thought to have initiated negotiations with Benfica, but it is believed that no fee has been agreed.
The player himself is said to be keen to join Rafael Benitez’s side, however the Portuguese club are holding out for a fee of close to £40m for the 25-year-old – which is someway clear of Napoli’s rumoured £17m bid.
The English clubs are more likely to be able to come close to that sum, although it remains unclear as to whether they will choose to do so.
Should Liverpool, Manchester United or Chelsea move for Nemanja Matic?
