There would have been many Liverpool fans dogged with conflicting emotions on Sunday afternoon as they awaited the Premier League clash between Manchester City and Manchester United.
Jurgen Klopp’s side are genuine challengers for the title this season, but reigning champions City are their biggest competitors for the crown.
Due to the intense rivalry between Liverpool and United, neither set of fans are likely to root for the other during a match.
However, there were some supporters on Merseyside who were willing the Red Devils to get a result at the Etihad Stadium.
Had they done so, Liverpool would remain at the top of the standings following their earlier 2-0 win over Fulham.
However, Pep Guardiola’s City side ended up claiming a 3-1 victory, with David Silva, Sergio Aguero and Ilkay Gundogan getting on the scoresheet.
United could have potentially got themselves back into contention after Anthony Martial made it 2-1 with a 58-minuth penalty, but the goal failed to inspire a comeback.
On Twitter, some Liverpool fans chose to mock the fact that United sit 10 points adrift of them in the table, while others admitted frustration in the result.

So odd watching highlights of Man City – united with all the mixed feelings – can’t imagine at the start of the season being told lfc would be unbeaten in November but we’d all be underwhelmed.

This is just embarrassing. There isn’t one united player within 5 yards of a city player whenever they receive the ball. A lot of the time it’s even 10 yards. https://t.co/44WsvLbK2Y

Manu are useless. We can only play well and win all our games to win that league.

Tbh, I was rooting for United. Would’ve even settled for a draw.
I’m up in Belfast Royal Court of Justice tomorrow, they may as well deal with this Tweet whilst I’m there.#LFC

But Everton did us a favor and drew Chelsea. And let’s be honest, we all secretly wanted United to score an equalizer, we all did. Shamefully…..but we did.

United’s gap to the top is identical to the relegation zone, after 12 games…

Did people really honestly think united would do us any favours…..??

Would have preferred United to win but I think City should be worried – amazing form and better results than last year but LFC patchy form and only 2 points behind
