Liverpool need £15m to secure deal & Rodgers on transfer alert over Afellay – Best of LFC

Liverpool FC: Shankly GatesThe appointment of Brendan Rodgers was supposed to herald a new era at Anfield as he began the progress of picking up the pieces from Kenny Dalglish’s disastrous second spell at the helm. The anticipation that Rodgers would return the Reds to the Premier League’s illustrious top four grew as he talked about implementing new ideas, fresh approaches and building a squad determined to bring Champions League football back to Merseyside. Yet the Northern Irishman appears to be following a similar path to his predecessor in the transfer market. The hallmarks of Dalglish’s ‘flavour of the month’ policy are evident in the 39-year-old’s decision to gamble £10.5 million of his budget on unproven Italy striker Fabio Borini. Then theres Clint Dempsey and Joe Allen. Two players with a single impressive campaign under their belts who are being touted as big money signings. Even though Rodgers worked with Allen at the Liberty Stadium last term nobody with a lick of rationality would spend £15m on him until he’s proven his consistency as a top-flight performer. And at 29 what value does Dempsey have at £10m? It’s the first time in his managerial career that Rodgers has been allowed to spend lavishly and from his opening gambits he’s showing his naiveness.

This week on FFC which Dutchman is Rodger interested in bringing to Anfield and would it be a mistake to let Andy Carroll leave in the summer?

Quote of the Week

“They were very tough days to me. I am not used to showing what I really feel, but the trial week was very difficult. I also cried alongside my wife. People at Liverpool are sure that it was a way that Manchester United used to put me out of the team and stop Liverpool. In England, Manchester United’s political power is strong and you must respect that and shut your mouth.” Luis Suarez blames Manchester United’s “political power” for his eight game ban last season.
