Liverpool full back Jon Flanagan’s career at Anfield, and footballing career itself, was in severe doubt as the academy graduate was out with a serious knee injury for just over one year. For many players in that situation, pursuing a career elsewhere would be the only option.

Flanagan only returned to the first team fold last month. His attitude and work rate has highly impressed manager Jurgen Klopp and the full back was rewarded with a new long term contract at the club.

On top of the new deal at Liverpool, Flanagan’s work to come back from this major setback has seen him be named as captain for his boyhood club in the Reds fixture away at Southampton this afternoon.

This is the ninth captain Liverpool have had this season but arguably the Reds latest captain will be more honoured to lead the team out than Jordan Henderson.
WE'VE GOT FLANNO, JON FLANNO.
I DONT THINK YOU UNDERSTAND.
HE'S JURGEN'S MAIN MAN.
HE'LL END YOUR CAREER.
WE'VE GOT JON FLANAGAN.

After his injury, starting ahead of Moreno or Clyne seemed a mammoth task but the captaincy shows the Scouse Cafu has a future at Anfield.
