Liverpool will have to do it all over again in the next few weeks after League Two Plymouth Argyle held them to a goalless draw at Anfield, leaving Jurgen Klopp's side mulling over an upcoming replay on the South Coast.

Klopp heavily rotated his squad for the game, featuring a wealth of young players as he looks to navigate upcoming games against Southampton in the League Cup and Manchester United next weekend, but he'll be extremely disappointed with the performance.

Despite dominating possession and not really being threatened by their fourth-tier opponents, Liverpool failed to find a breakthrough and didn't cause too many issues of their own- which all adds up to a poor day for the Reds.

Here, we've looked back at five things we learned from the game and what it means for Klopp's title-chasing side moving forward.

Stewart not good enough

Highly-favoured by Jurgen Klopp, 23-year-old Kevin Stewart needed to prove himself today in a rare appearance but he failed to grab his chance by both hands and was instead left as one of Liverpool's worse performers on the field.

Managing the entiring ninety minutes, Stewart's decision making was poor and it raises questions about his future. At his age, he needs to be showing more and he may have now missed his chance to become a hit at Anfield.

Liverpool lack depth

Liverpool fielded a wealth of players who lack experience in yesterday's clash but these players are on the fringes of the first team, with many of them just one injury away from coming into the starting line-up. By these performances though, it's concerning.

Divock Origi struggled to overcome a League Two defence and the Reds looked a bit lost without Sadio Mane, who of course is away for the African Cup of Nations. With a fierce schedule ahead, these fringe players need to step-up.

Handing Liverpool a replay on the South Coast, Liverpool now face two games a week for the remainder of the month and a handful of testing games. With a double-header of the League Cup semi-finals on the horizon, and Premier League clashes with Manchester United and Chelsea also coming up, this was certainly a match Liverpool would have wanted to avoid.

Liverpool now have six games to play between now and the end of the month, which could decide the course of their season. Three crucial Premier League ties against United, Chelsea and Swansea are massive for the title race, whilst the tests against Southampton and Plymouth will decide their fate in the cup competitions.

Cup magic absent

Plymouth Argyle will be delighted to hold Liverpool to a goalless draw, being just one of three sides who have stopped Liverpool from scoring at Anfield in the past year, but the match definitely doesn't go down as a classic.

Plymouth were happy to spend the entire game defending and Liverpool failed to break them down, which resulted in a drab affair for all watching. The visitors won't care but Liverpool fans will be furious.

Second-half woeful

Liverpool dominated the first-half, and saw a goal disallowed, but their second-half performance will be criticised as they failed to get going properly- despite introducing the likes of Daniel Sturridge and Adam Lallana off the bench.

Klopp's side definitely had the ability to overcome their fourth-tier opponents but failed to show it and will now face an inquiry in the next few days. With their difficult games coming up, they need to improve vastly.
