Barcelona return for Liverpool star

Liverpool 'keeper Pepe ReinaBarcelona are set to step up their interest in Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina, according to reports from the Daily Star.

The La Liga champions have been linked with the Spaniard – who was a part of their youth set-up earlier in his career – for some time, and are believed to see him as the ideal replacement for current number one Victor Valdes, who is set to leave the Nou Camp at the end of next season.

Liverpool themselves appear to be resigned to losing Reina, having concluded a £9million deal with Sunderland for Simon Mignolet.

This has opened the door for Barca to return, and the Daily Star quotes sources in Spain as having described the 30-year-old as “a serious candidate to sign for Barcelona in the coming days”.

Although Valdes is set to see out his contract at the club, it is thought that the Catalans are looking to phase a new stopper into their first-team during 2013/14 to ease the transition.

Despite links with a number of alternatives, Reina is still said to be their top target, and one they are confident that they can secure.

The Reds star had said that he is willing to stay and fight for first-team football, but with the World Cup around the corner the lure of returning to his homeland could be an attractive prospect.

Liverpool fans, would you begrudge Pepe Reina a return to Barcelona?
