Joel Matip only started one of Liverpool’s first 14 matches of the 2018-19 Premier League campaign.
Indeed, Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez were the preferred partnership at the heart of the defence, with Dejan Lovren also in the mix.
At that point, it did appear that it would be a real struggle for Matip to earn minutes during the 2018-19 season.
Injuries to both Gomez and Lovren opened the door for the 27-year-old, though, and he has not missed a single minute of Premier League football since returning from injury against Crystal Palace on January 19.
The Cameroon international is far from the most talented player in the Liverpool squad, but has performed a key role alongside the outstanding Van Dijk.
And the Merseyside club’s supporters are certainly appreciative of the job that he has undertaken since stepping into the side.
A selection of the Twitter reaction to an interview from Matip can be seen below:
He’s been superb last few games but he deffo Needs to take it easy on the Pele runs against Barcelona though

Joel gets on with his job quietly and doesn’t court publicity. He’s probably almost the most reliable player we’ve had I the second half of the season. He recovered from his collarbone and then had to cover for other injuries and hasn’t looked back. From fourth choice to first.
