Boost for Liverpool as £30m striker given green light for move

Aston Villa boss Tim Sherwood will not stand in the way of Christian Benteke’s proposed move to Liverpool, The Mirror understands.

Although Villa are asking for around £30m for the Belgian striker, if someone can pay that then he may be on his way.

The Villa boss said: “If a player doesn’t want to play for the club anymore and the club he wants to go to meets the valuation, it’s best to let them go.”

It is believed Brendan Rodgers has been given a budget of £30m to overhaul his squad, so the transfer may depend on people leaving the club first.

Raheem Sterling has been at the centre of a reported £50m bid from Manchester City and that transfer could free up some funds for Liverpool to get the Villa man.

The 24-year-old Benteke scored against Liverpool at Wembley to help dump them out of the FA Cup, one of 10 goals this term.

However, Sherwood was adamant that he didn’t want to sell his star man when he said: “I don’t want to talk about selling Christian when I’ve got no intention of doing that.

“So it would have to be a lot of money for someone to get him off us.”
