Brendan Rodgers hails performance

Liverpool manager Brendan RodgersBrendan Rodgers hailed the display of Reading goalkeeper Alex McCarthy and says Liverpool could not have done any more to win.

The Reds had to settle for a 0-0 draw at the Madejski Stadium on Saturday afternoon but it would have been a different story had McCarthy not pulled off a number of fine saves to deny Luis Suarez, Steven Gerrard, Philippe Coutinho and Daniel Sturridge.

The Royals stopper, who was playing his first game since November after recovering from shoulder surgery, denied Suarez on two occasions in the final 10 minutes and Rodgers says he is destined for the top.

“Our players couldn’t have done any more. Some of our interchanging and creativity was outstanding,” Rodgers said. “Sometimes you have days where the keeper makes one or two good saves, but we had 14 shots on target away from home today.

“I know Alex well. He’s genuinely going to be a top, top keeper and to perform like that having been out for so long was absolutely staggering.

“He has all the qualities to be a top, top keeper – he’s 6’5”, makes good saves, is good on his feet and is very calm and assured despite being very young.

“Absolutely I can see him playing for England, there’s no question about that.”
