According to David Ornstein on The Ornstein and Chapman Podcast (January 7th), Liverpool are interested in signing Todd Cantwell over the summer from Norwich City.

What's the story?

The Reds have been linked with the likes of Jadon Sancho and Kylian Mbappe in recent months, but now it is a player closer to home who they are said to be looking at.

The Athletic journalist Ornstein says that the Anfield outfit are one of a number of teams who are interested in taking the 21-year-old to Anfield.

One for the future

It's very rare that players actually improve when they make the step up from the Championship to the Premier League at the first time of asking, but that appears to be the case for Cantwell. After scoring once and providing two assists in the second tier last season, he now has six and two respectively already, and we still have 17 games left to play.

The England U21 international has looked adept both on the left and right flanks, showing his versatility. Perhaps best known for his trademark goal celebration, Cantwell has taken to the Premier League like a duck to water. Even if the Canaries get relegated, he may have already done enough to guarantee himself a spot in the division beyond the end of this campaign.

The big fat Liverpool quiz of 2019 - how much do you remember about the last year at Anfield?

With Xherdan Shaqiri looking as though he could depart the club, a new option may be needed across the front three, and Cantwell would prove to be a cost-effective option. Although a bigger fee than his £13.5m Transfermarkt market value may be needed to acquire his services, it is unlikely he would set the Merseyside club back a fortune, and his age is another bonus.

A potential switch is not being mooted until the next transfer window, so the former Fortuna Sittard loanee still has time to prove his worth even further. Should he continue to perform well over the next few months, Liverpool may very well be in for a fight in the race to sign him.
