Jamie Carragher recently said that Liverpool don't buy superstars, but rather they make them.

It was a claim met by widespread ridicule from those on Twitter, who quoted the prices paid for Virgil van Dijk - £75m - and Alisson - £67m.

The big fat Liverpool quiz of 2019 - how much do you remember about the last year at Anfield?

Both deals were world-record fees for players in their respective positions at the time, and it was therefore argued that they were already established stars given the Reds parted with huge sums to acquire them.

However, looking at the market value of the squads before Jurgen Klopp took over and the latest numbers, the difference is staggering, and shows that the former Liverpool captain may have a point. In the 2014-15 campaign, Forbes (via The Daily Mirror) valued the players on the Anfield outfit's books at £360m. Fast forward to now, and that number is at a staggering £1.83 billion.

The cases of some players in particular shows the impact that Klopp has had since joining the club. Sadio Mane, for example, was valued at £27m by Transfermarkt in 2016, the summer he made the move to Merseyside from Southampton. Now, he is said to be worth £135m, a jump of over £100m.

It is the same in regards to Mohamed Salah. He was valued at £36m when he joined in 2017. Now he is worth the same as Mane.

Even whilst he was at Borussia Dortmund, Klopp increased the value of a number of his players - look at the trajectories of Robert Lewandowski (from £10.8m to £45m in two years), Mario Gotze (from £16.2m to £40.5m in two years) and Mats Hummels (from £21.6m to £31.5m in two years), for example.

Whilst inflation and the increased fees in the transfer market since the huge £200m deal taking Neymar to PSG must be taken into consideration, it is still impressive to see how much good work the 52-year-old has done with the players at his disposal.

There will may be claims Carragher is biased due to his previous connections with the European champions, but the stats here prove that, at least on this point, he can't be challenged. Klopp really does appear to have the ability to turn good players into star quality - that is not something that many possess.
