Tonight, Liverpool will travel to Huddersfield Town for their next pre-season friendly. Yet for manager Jurgen Klopp, it will be anything but a standard summer warm-up fixture to prepare his side for the coming season.
Indeed, the Championship side are managed by the German gaffer’s close friend, former team-mate and colleague David Wagner, who he wanted to bring to Anfield upon being appointed Liverpool manager in October 2015.
Huddersfield, however, got there first with the offer of becoming the second-tier outfit’s manager – replacing former boss Chris Powell.
But the bond between Klopp and Wagner remains incredibly strong, in fact, the former describes the latter as “maybe my best friend.”
And in honour of their reunion this evening, Klopp has dug out an old photograph from the duo’s days at FC Mainz, taken after a draw with FC Mainz and just before heading off to Oktoberfest for likely a truckload of German beer.
He told Liverpool’s club website; “This is David [points to David Wagner, in the bucket hat on the far left]. If you see him today you cannot believe that’s him. And that’s me! I have a cigar in my hand but that was after the game.
“When I was in Munich I remember playing against 1860 and it was a draw and it was one of my best games for Mainz. Afterwards we went to the Oktoberfest, so it was a good night!”
The phrase ‘old school cool’ certainly comes to mind…
