Joel Matip’s potential move from Schalke to Liverpool is nothing but a “hoax”, according to the German club’s chairman, Clemens Tonnies.
The Cameroon international has been aligned with a Bosman move to Anfield at the end of his contract this summer for some time, with Reds manager Jurgen Klopp thought to be a big fan of the athletic centre-back after watching closely during his spell in the Bundesliga.
Reports on Wednesday claiming that an early bid to lure Matip to England before Monday’s deadline passes did the rounds, while it’s also been suggested that positive talks between the player – who is free to discuss a pre-contract agreement – and Liverpool have already taken place.
However, Schalke chairman, Tonnies, told Sport1 that suggestions his defensive ace is moving to join Klopp are wide of the mark:
“That’s a hoax.” He said when quizzed on the situation.
Matip is not the only player Liverpool are interested, with Shakhtar Donetsk’s Alex Teixeira a major target.
