Noel Whelan has told Football Insider that West Ham should pursue Liverpool defender Nathaniel Clyne.

What did he say?

The Hammers have been linked with the 28-year-old, who has been out injured since July after rupturing his cruciate ligament.

The big fat Liverpool quiz of 2019 - how much do you remember about the last year at Anfield?

The former Leeds man said about the London club's interest in him when asked: "Yeah, look Nathaniel Clyne was fantastic when he was at Southampton. He did okay at Liverpool, not hit the heights he should have done, but you know there’s a player in him. He’s been hampered with injuries, but yeah this seems the perfect match for player and club if he can stay fit and get himself right. Moyes could have a really good player on his hands, and with Fredericks and Clyne there, two fantastic players and good options."

Still has a future at Liverpool

You can't argue that Clyne would be a good signing for David Moyes and the Irons. He has 185 Premier League appearances and 14 England caps to his name, whilst he has been around a winning Liverpool team for the past four years.

It is for those, and many other reasons, that Reds should also look to keep hold of the former Crystal Palace man. He may not have the attacking ability of Trent Alexander-Arnold - he has never managed more than five assists in one campaign - but from a defensive point he is solid to say the least. He has regularly averaged over two tackles a game, as well as over one interception as well.

Displacing the 21-year-old right-back will be difficult, but cover is still needed. Jurgen Klopp has used Joe Gomez in that role and, although he has played more games in that position than at the heart of the defence, he is arguably better alongside Virgil van Dijk - he has a WhoScored rating of 7.17 there as compared to 7.08 in Alexander-Arnold's position.

With Clyne set to return from his injury at the end of January, he still has a role to play at Anfield, and can help Klopp get the best out of both Alexander-Arnold and the former Charlton man. Given how long he has been out of the action, and with his contract ending in the summer, a huge fee would not be commanded at this point - he also has a Transfermarkt value of just £9m. The way Liverpool are playing, this could very well be a monumental season, and not just in the Premier League - the Champions League and FA Cup are still very much on the radar. In the final, vital part of the season, Clyne could end his Reds career on a high.
