According to the Liverpool Echo, Liverpool will not be making a move for Southampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy this summer.

What's the word, then?

Well, a report from The Mirror earlier in the week suggested that the Reds were considering a move for Saints stopper McCarthy as an option in case Simon Mignolet leaves the club this summer - the Belgian international seems keen on an exit after losing his place to Alisson.

However, the Echo has gone on record to say that England international McCarthy is not on their radar.

The former Crystal Palace glovesman began last season as Southampton's No.1 in between the sticks, but lost his place to Angus Gunn not long after Ralph Hasenhuttl's arrival - it was quite the change in fortunes for him seeing as he was named as the club's Player of the Season for his efforts the previous year.

Liverpool are right not to pursue McCarthy

The Champions League winners do not need a player who wasn't even considered as first choice for a side who finished 16th in the Premier League last term.

What Jurgen Klopp needs is a real quality goalkeeper who would be happy to bide his time behind Alisson, but also push the Brazilian international to his very best and keep him on his toes.

The former Roma keeper seems to be the complete professional and doesn't appear to be the type to get complacent, but competition for places helps keep even the best of players focused and it is almost a necessity in football.

The 6 ft 4 McCarthy doesn't seem good enough to push Alisson to his very limits and it could even be argued that he isn't much better than Mignolet, a man who offered next to no threat to the No.1 shirt at Anfield last season.

Liverpool are making entirely the right decision not having the 29-year-old Englishman on their transfer wishlist.
