Juventus and Italy legend Alessandro Del Piero has described Mohamed Salah as "a god" to Joe.co.uk.

What did he say?

The 45-year-old former World Cup winner was speaking at the Laureus awards on Monday.

Talking about Salah, who used to play for AS Roma and Fiorentina in Del Piero's native country, he said: "Salah is already a God - and not only in Egypt!

"When he was at Roma, I remember how many times he was in front of the goal and then he missed the goal.

"And then all of a sudden, at Liverpool he improved that and he scored more than 30 goals per season!

"When you have this kind of mentality that you want to improve yourself, to grow - it’s the best thing."

Getting worse

In the Egypt international's last season in Serie A, Salah performed fantastically. In 29 matches, he managed 15 goals, as well as 11 assists, which earned himself a move back to the Premier League following his failed spell with Chelsea previously. That last campaign saw him scored a goal every 5.3 shots.

His first season at Anfield saw him net 32 league goals, winning the division's Golden Boot in the process - those strikes came at a rate of every 4.5 shots. However, that ratio is getting progressively worse season by season. Last time out, he managed 22 goals in the Premier League from 137 shots - a rate of 6.2 - and this term, his 14 goals have come from 89 shots, which is one every 6.3 attempts.

The 27-year-old, of course, is a wonderful footballer, and his ability to put the ball in the back of the net is clear for all to see. Part of being a regular goalscorer is having the confidence and belief to shoot from a whole range of angles and situations - it is the perfect example of speculating to accumulate.

However, Salah really should be scoring more than he currently does - he has already proven in the past he can do just that.

Some supporters have accused him of being wasteful, and these stats back up those claims. Whilst he initially improved on Merseyside, his overall form is slipping off slightly with each passing campaign.

Even with that, he is still a top-class player - but perhaps a "god" is a little much.
