Liverpool’s hopes of securing a summer deal for Feyenoord defender Stefan de Vrij have suffered a set back, after the player distanced himself from a move.
Reds chief Brendan Rodgers is believed to have made defensive reinforcements his top priority in the coming months, as he looks to assemble a squad capable of Champions League qualification.
With Jamie Carragher having retired and the future of Martin Skrtel far from clear, the Northern Irishman is keen to draft in cover at centre-back, despite having already agreed a deal for Kolo Toure.
One of his top targets is believed to be de Vrij, who has been earning rave reviews for his performances in the Eredivisie.
The 21-year-old is thought of as one of the top emerging talents in his homeland, and despite him having penned a new contract with the Rotterdam outfit recently, speculation has suggested that he could be on the move.
But, the Dutch international insists that he won’t be changing clubs this summer, and that he is perfectly happy with Feyenoord:
“I just renewed my contract with Feyenoord [until 2015], so I will play for them next year.” He is quoted by talkSPORT.
Liverpool are also said to be keen on Tiago Ilori and Kyriakos Papadopoulos of Sporting Lisbon and Schalke repectively.
