Liverpool made the first major move of the summer by signing Fabinho on Monday night, and Nabil Fekir’s performance against Ireland showed exactly why he should follow the Brazilian to Anfield.

According to Guardian writer Ed Aarons, Fabinho “could soon be joined” by Fekir, who is in “advanced discussions” to move to Liverpool.

The French playmaker has mostly played as number ten or “second striker” for Lyon this season, and his performance on Monday showed he has the versatility and creativity to make him a perfect replacement for Philippe Coutinho.

France beat Ireland 2-0 on Monday night, and the Lyon captain played as part of an exciting attacking trio with Kylian Mbappe and Olivier Giroud, popping up in various positions to link midfield with attack.

French outlet GFFN compared the 24 year-old to Dimitri Payet in their player ratings, as the playmakers’ fast decision making, close control and sheer confidence wowed spectators at the Stade de France.

“He played with confidence, with swagger and it reminded me slightly of Dimitri Payet prior to Euro 2016 when he knew he had the ability to win games on his own.”

Fekir performance vs Ireland

The Liverpool-linked attacker scored France’s second goal moments after Giroud grabbed the first, and also created two chances for teammates, while boasting an impressive 88% pass success rate.

Jürgen Klopp is desperate to sign a direct replacement for Coutinho, and Fekir’s ability to make something out of nothing and his impressive quick link up play could make him the absolute perfect fit for Klopp’s Reds.

If Liverpool weren’t dead set on signing Fekir already, they certainly will be after his showing on Monday night, and if the Frenchman can learn to ply his trade from the slightly deeper position where Coutinho played, then the Reds’ midfield will be as scary as their attack.
