Liverpool could make a move for RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner, as has been reported by The Mirror.

What's the story?

An effort is being made to bring the 23-year-old to Anfield, though there is also competition for his signature from Chelsea.

It is suggested that he would cost £60m according to the report, but the Reds will be playing catch up, as Chelsea have already begun negotiations with the Bundesliga outfit.

Jurgen Klopp is said to be a keen admirer of the Germany international, and was hoping to make a move for him in the summer, but interest from the Blues has rushed that process along.

Leipzig are likely to do all they can in an effort to keep their talisman, as they bid to become Bundesliga champions for the first time in their history.

More than just goals

Werner is a prolific striker, having scored 20 goals and added six assists from just 18 Bundesliga starts - a return that is incredibly impressive, highlighting why there is such interest in him.

However, the German frontman offers more than just goals and assists, as he makes an impact in general play, something that Klopp will also value - most notably, in the league, Werner averages 1.7 key passes and 1.8 dribbles per game.

These numbers even outdo those of Roberto Firmino in the Premier League, with the Brazilian having averaged 1.3 key passes and 1.5 dribbles per game, prior to the match against Manchester United.

This does not necessarily mean that he is a better option than the man currently acting as the central cog of Liverpool's famed front three.

However, his signing would still be very encouraging though, as having someone who can come close to replicating Firmino's influence in general play will be very important if he is to be challenged for his spot.
