Steven Gerrard’s transition into a defensive midfielder has gone some way to masking the limitations of that particular position in Brendan Rodgers’ squad. When Lucas went out injured in January, it was said that midfield position would be the team’s undoing. It’s incredible to think now that Lucas wouldn’t even feature in Liverpool’s current best XI, such has been the effect of Gerrard’s move further back in midfield.
But Rodgers will be mindful of adding a specialist in that position. Porto’s Fernando has been linked and may opt for a move to England following the World Cup. Picking a player of his ability on a free would be seen as a very good piece of business.
Another option is Ivan Rakitic, who has been Sevilla’s best player this season and has caught the attention of Real Madrid. Rakitic would be in Liverpool’s price range, with his contract nearing its end and the club trying to tie him down to a longer deal. Rakitic’s influence spans Sevilla’s attacking and defensive game. While it’s hard to describe him as a specialist of any kind, he does numerous things extremely well.
