Rafael Benitez wants to take Pepe Reina to Napoli amid uncertainty over his Liverpool future, The Express reports.
Anfield has welcomed Simon Mignolet from Sunderland for £9million this summer, throwing Reina‘s position as number one goalkeeper into doubt.
Benitez, who signed Reina for Liverpool in 2005 and shares the same agent as the shot stopper, wants the Spaniard to be a part of his restructuring at Napoli.
He has supposedly delayed the signing of Julio Cesar on a season-long loan from Queens Park Rangers in order to pursue Spaniard.
Napoli want a quick conclusion to any deal though, as current goalkeeper Morgan De Sanctis is headed for Roma.
Reina, who is one of Liverpool’s highest earners at £110,000 a week, is currently on extended leave following his part in Spain’s Confederations Cup campaign.
However, Brendan Rodgers is expecting the 30-year-old to join the rest of the squad for pre-season training in Melbourne on Sunday.
The Liverpool manager said Mignolet had been signed to provide competition, but the Belgian expects to start and losing Reina would spare him a tricky decision, as well as reducing the club’s wage bill.
With next season culminating in a World Cup, it is thought paramount that players wanting to start for their country need to be regulars for their clubs, which could also sway the stopper’s decision.
