Football is a game where managerial tactics can win or lose you games, but actually winning competitions often comes down to the quality of squad at your disposal.

At Liverpool this season, it’s clear that there is a huge problem in defence as the Reds’ continue to leaks goals, and that has led to accusations if neglecting his defence aimed at Jurgen Klopp. But, as only Manchester City have conceded fewer shots on their goal this season, it appears that there’s more to it that just the number of bodies they have behind the ball. Clearly the defence needs lots of work - it’s by no means perfect - but there’s clearly a piece of the process that’s not working. That doesn’t mean the system is wrong, but sometimes the manager isn’t the only problem

One former Premier League boss has jumped to Klopp’s defence. Harry Redknapp - who you might put in the more old school category of football manager - may not be the first person you’d expect to leap in on behalf of the Anfield boss, but when it comes to squad quality, he knows a thing or two.

Having always been able to spot a player and work the transfer market to create successful squad, the former Tottenham and West Ham boss thinks the problem is out of Klopp’s hands for the moment.
