German football expert Raphael Honigstein has revealed that Jurgen Klopp has big plans in mind for his first summer as Liverpool boss in his Sport1 column, with Mario Gotze his top target, Timo Horn and Loris Karius options in the event they miss out on Marc-Andre ter Stegen and Christian Benteke set for the axe.
The former Dortmund boss was parachuted in to replace Brendan Rodgers back in October, and has endured a jam-packed schedule as his Reds side reached the League Cup Final and the Europa League quarter-finals (where they will play BVB), alongside league responsibilities.
In the middle of this was an underwhelming winter transfer window, in which a late move for Alex Teixeira collapsed, leaving Klopp with emergency loanee Steven Caulker as his only addition – Marko Grujic was signed and loaned back to Red Star Belgrade.
As a result, a big summer is expected on Merseyside, and Honigstein has revealed what he believes will happen.
First off, he tips Gotze to be the number one target.
The midfielder was a key player under Klopp at Dortmund and has recently been aligned with the Kop side amid fears surrounding his future at Bayern Munich.
Honigstein also outlines Karius of Mainz, and FC Koln’s Horn as alternatives to Barcelona goalkeeper Ter Stegen, as Klopp searches for a top quality stopper.
As well as this claims Benteke will be sold t a loss after a miserable debut season on Merseyside, as he doesn’t fit with the manager’s pressing-based game plan.
