Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has suggested that the club should move for a player that shares Victor Wanyama's qualities.

The defensive midfielder has been at Tottenham Hotspur since 2016 when he signed from Southampton.

During his time at the North London club, the 26-year-old has impressed with his strength and ability to break up play, and Gerrard thinks that Liverpool could do with a solid figure in the middle of the park.

At the moment, manager Jurgen Klopp uses Jordan Henderson and/or Emre Can as part of a midfield three.

With Naby Keita arriving at Anfield from RB Leipzig in the summer, Klopp is expected to shuffle the midfield again.

Prior to Liverpool's Champions League last-16 first leg 5-0 win over Porto in Portugal, the former Reds captain mentioned that a "monster" was needed at the Merseyside outfit.

“I think Liverpool would benefit from a monster of a centre-midfielder, a holder. A Wanyama-type player who does sit in and is disciplined, and he would give more protection to the back four.”

Wanyama, who has suffered with injuries this season, has made just nine Premier League appearances in the current campaign.
