Glen puts pen to paper as new Liverpool deal edges closer

Liverpool defender Glen Johnson is prepared to commit his future to the Anfield club by signing a new three year contract, according to the Mail on Sunday.

The 30-year-old England international was heavily linked with a move away from Merseyside in the summer after initial contract negotiations broke down, with Italian side Roma reportedly keen on snapping up the full-back on a free transfer.

Although Johnson was free to sign a pre-contract agreement with a new club in the January transfer window, he has decided that he wants to remain at Anfield, with a new contract agreement imminent.

Former England left-back Ashley Cole – who now plays for Roma and with whom Johnson once played at Chelsea – reportedly recommended the Reds defender to the¬†Italian club’s executives, but they have now been left disappointed after Johnson’s decision to remain at the club he signed for from Portsmouth in 2009.

Johnson has made 11 Premier League appearances for Liverpool this season, scoring once.
