James Pearce has said that he believes Joe Gomez is worth £100m.

What did he say?

The Liverpool reporter praised Gomez's performance against West Ham on Twitter on Wednesday, calling him a "special player".

Call yourself a Liverpool expert? How much did each of these big-money January signings cost?

He was then asked how much he thinks the 23-year-old is worth, and he claimed that number to now be £100m.

Not yet, but on the way

It certainly is a bold claim by Pearce, and right now, it may be a little off the mark - that valuation would make him the most valuable defender on the planet, even more than his teammates Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk and Andrew Robertson. He has made just 92 appearances for the Reds, whilst he has just 19 starts in all competitions so far this term to date.

However, in the absence of Dejan Lovren and Joel Matip, he has proven that he should be Van Dijk's partner at the heart of Jurgen Klopp's defence. This season, Liverpool have conceded just two goals in the nine league matches Gomez has been selected at centre-back, whilst they conceded just four in 10 relevant matches last term. That is a record that any defender on the planet would be proud of.

Of course, the challenge now is for him to do this for an entire season - he has never featured in more than 23 matches, whether starting or from the bench, in one league campaign. Before he does that, then he cannot be compared to the likes of the Netherlands international and the best of the best.

However, should he produce more displays like the ones he has shown in recent matches, the sky really is the limit, especially considering his young age. In a few years, Pearce may very well be proven right, and Gomez will then become another asset for Klopp and co.

Meanwhile, one Liverpool man's future is up in the air following this Bundesliga record transfer.
