When the transfer window closed, Liverpool fans would have been delighted with the club's business.

However, some may have felt slightly nervous about the fact that the team's centre-back partnership was not completely solid.

Towards the end of last season, Dejan Lovren played alongside Virgil van Dijk, but the Croatian international struggles with consistency.

Due to Joel Matip's injury and the departure of Ragnar Klavan, Joe Gomez was installed in the centre of defence despite the fact that he played at right-back last season.

The young defender held his own in the 4-0 thrashing of West Ham United on the opening weekend of the season, but he particularly shone on Monday night when he was tested against Crystal Palace.

Van Dijk was a pillar of strength throughout the 90 minutes, but Gomez was outstanding and equally as comfortable dealing with Palace's attacks.

He made four clearances in total, and only his centre-back partner forced away the danger more times than the England international.

Gomez also showed strength and power in well-timed tackles and interceptions.

The 21-year-old played out from the back with ease and gave Klopp plenty to think about with regards to his defensive options.

It is only early days in the season, but Gomez showed against Palace that he is worthy of playing more centrally as opposed to in a full-back position.
