Many wondered whether Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp would dip into the summer transfer window to find an established centre-back to play alongside Virgil van Dijk.

It turned out, though, that the Merseyside outfit already had a quality option within their ranks.

Joe Gomez began the season in the heart of defence due to Dejan Lovren's abdominal injury, and he swiftly proved that he was good enough to partner Van Dijk.

The 21-year-old had a steady and confident presence at the back, however in Sunday's Premier League match against Fulham, his assured manner was missing.

The Reds earned a 2-0 victory at Anfield, but there were some concerning moments, one of which involved Gomez.

The defender's mistake almost led to a goal from Ryan Sessegnon, but the Fulham star ended up missing the target.

Gomez was clumsy at times as he gave away a couple of free kicks and he also made significantly less passes than Van Dijk, who strung 109 together.

The England international still showed strength in the air and put in a few well-timed tackles, but his confidence was lacking.

In the last few games Klopp has tinkered with Gomez's position, sometimes playing him at right-back instead of in the centre.

Given how well he has been performing alongside Van Dijk, regularly switching him to the right could prove detrimental to his form.
