Towards the end of last season Dejan Lovren emerged as Virgil van Dijk’s centre-back partner.
The pair closed the campaign together in the Champions League final against Real Madrid, but it was an unhappy night in Kiev as the Reds lost 3-1.
Lovren went on to play in the World Cup final with Croatia, and once again he was on the losing side as France lifted the much-coveted trophy.
Since returning to Anfield, injury has prevented the centre-back from playing for Jurgen Klopp’s side, and during that time Joe Gomez has swiped his teammate’s spot.
The 21-year-old spent last season playing as a right-back, but he has slotted well into a central position alongside Van Dijk.
The England international is keeping out Joel Matip, and he could soon be making sure that Lovren stays on the sidelines.
During an episode of Sky Sports’ The Debate, pundit Craig Bellamy described Lovren as the “weak link”, suggesting that Gomez deserves to continue as Van Dijk’s partner.
With that in mind, do you think that Lovren should remain on the sidelines for the foreseeable?
