England squads don't tend to inspire their fans very often these days - although the negative reaction is often contrived and overblown - so creative players such as Adam Lallana are a precious commodity for Gareth Southgate.

The former Southampton playmaker, valued at £22.5m by Transfermarkt, is rare among Englishmen - at least until the new generation which is sweeping all before them at youth level reaches the senior team - in terms of his creative gifts, ability to drift inside off the wing and manipulate the ball in tight spaces.

However, he has struggled badly for gametime this season, with his comeback stalling on numerous occasions and for that reason, Southgate has not elected to take him to Russia for this summer's World Cup.

The former Middlesbrough boss eluded that it is only the fact that he is so highly thought of in England circles that has ensured Lallana's place on the standby list, given his lack of fitness and the opinion of his club manager Jurgen Klopp.
