Liverpool triumphed over PSG at Anfield in a huge Champions League clash on Tuesday night. Last season’s defeated finalists in the competition overcame the Parisian giants after a last gasp Roberto Firmino winner, but it was no less than the Reds deserved following a fine performance.

Whilst Liverpool’s first choice centre-forward struck the decisive winner, it was Daniel Sturridge who opened proceedings with a well-placed header on the half-hour mark.

The 29-year-old was included in the starting XI as a result of an eye injury Firmino sustained in the previous match. The England international deserves credit for taking his opportunity to shine on the big stage so well.

Sturridge was a menace to the PSG defence all night and should probably have even scored more than the one goal. Given the his brutal struggles with injury in recent seasons though, he’ll just be glad to have emerged from the fixture unscathed.

Prior to his extended bout of fitness struggles, Sturridge was one of the top strikers in the Premier League. Against PSG, he reminded everyone just how good he can be.

Sturridge’s current contract with the club expires at the end of this season, meaning next summer he could leave Anfield as a free agent. Jurgen Klopp should take heed of what he saw on Tuesday night, though, and do all he can to get Sturridge to agree new terms with the Merseyside outfit.

What do you think, Liverpool fans - does Sturridge deserve a new contract and the chance to revive his Liverpool career or do his fitness concerns make him too much of a gamble?
