According to reports in Italian media outlet Corriere dello Sport, Liverpool have joined Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur in the race to sign €30m-rated (£26.5m) Inter Milan midfielder Marcelo Brozovic.

What's the word, then?

Well, the Croatia international has found first-team minutes hard to come by for the Serie A giants this season and could be on his way out of the San Siro this month, with Corriere dello Sport reporting that Reds boss Jurgen Klopp is eyeing a potential swoop for the 25-year-old.

Corriere dello Sport says that while the player has a release clause of €50m (£44.1), he will be allowed to leave for €30m (£26.5m) before the end of the month and is also interesting La Liga side Valencia.

Italian website Tuttomercatoweb reported that Tottenham were also keen on the Croatian last month, claiming that Brozovic had been put up for sale despite his contract not being due to run out until 2021.

How has Brozovic done this season?

As we mentioned previously, it has been a difficult campaign for the 25-year-old.

Despite scoring six goals and providing a further four assists in 28 appearances in all competitions last term, half of his 14 Serie A outings this time around have come from the substitutes’ bench.

The Croatia international has made 16 appearances in total, scoring three goals and picking up one assist.

According to WhoScored.com, his main strengths are his passing and his ability to make key passes, and he has completed 27 of the latter in 14 Italian top flight matches, with his overall accuracy at 84.1%.

Would he be a good signing for Liverpool?

He certainly could be, yes.

The 25-year-old wouldn't be a direct replacement for Philippe Coutinho and would be more likely to fill in for Emre Can if the Germany international ends up leaving, as he can play in a central midfield role as well as an attacking one.

The Croatia international would certainly bring some quality in the middle of the park, but if Can stays and with the arrival of Naby Keita in the summer already finalised, it would be difficult to see him being a regular starter.

What's the verdict, then?

While Klopp may have some interest in Brozovic and believe that he is a good player, it is hard to believe that he is what Liverpool need right now unless the German manager does see him as Coutinho's successor – which would be surprising.
